A Look Ahead to the World Cup 2010 Semi-Finals

world-cup-2010

After 60 games in three weeks, we are now down to four nations, Uruguay, Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Few people would have predicted this before the World Cup began.

It has proven to be a shock-and-sorrow-laden tournament with 2006 finalists Italy and France both failing to advance – the first time that the winner and runner-up of the last tournament were defeated in the first round of matches.

The shock did not stop there. During the round of 16, England was humbled by a resilient Germany (1-4), who then inflicted an even more humiliating defeat (4-0) on a previously impressive Argentina. And Brazil – hotly tipped to reach the final – threw away their chance to advance for only the second time in their history and lost 2-1 to the Netherlands.

With the semi-finalists now determined, people around the world are speculating what will happen and who will be the winners of the next round of matches.

Can the Netherlands defeat Uruguay to reach their first final since 1978?

Will Spain repeat the failure of England and Argentina or defeat Germany to reach the final for the first time in its history?

2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup Top 10 Stars Prediction I

August 31st, 2010 admin No comments

2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup is the most intense competition in soccer. The world’s top soccer stars are gathering together to give the world a great show. Who will become the king and who will become the tragic hero of the sport? We cannot wait to find out.

Messi

Rank 1: Lionel Messi
Country: Argentina
Position: Forward
Comment: Messi can break down any defense off the dribble. He is a soccer genius with a low center of gravity which enables his fast speed. Messi’s game relies on its unpredictability and magnificent control of the ball, which seldom demurs to anything Messi asks it to do.

Rooney

Rank 2: Wayne Mark Rooney
Country: England
Position: Forward
Comment: As a player, Rooney is noted not only for the deft touch and pace, but also for his strength and physical presence which are usually the hallmarks of mature players. He is a complete striker who can play anywhere across the front three.

Ronaldo

Rank 3: Cristiano Ronaldo
Country: Portugal
Position: Midfielder
Comment: Ronaldo is fast and explosive. His ability to beat a player and whip in crosses makes him a feared opponent. He specializes in long-range free kicks and shows the ability to shoot from anywhere.

Kaka

Rank 4: Kaka (Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite)
Country: Brazil
Position: Midfielder
Comment: Kaka prefers a counterattacking style, and he comes from an affluent background. As the central figure in Brazil’s midfield, Kaka has superior dribbling skills and is one of the best passers in the world.

Torres

Rank 5: Fernando Torres
Country: Spain
Position: Forward
Comment: Torres is a well-rounded, pacy striker with tremendous technique who draws much support as the best in the world. He likes to play off the shoulder of the last defender and can finish with aplomb with either foot and is also superb in the air.

To be continued…

Update: did Daphne Guinness buy Isabella Blow’s collection?

August 30th, 2010 admin No comments

So avid readers will have just read how Isabella Blow’s supposedly public auction actually went on sale secretly over the weekend to a person who wished to remain as private as the auction — or not, as the case may now be. Our sources tell us the not-so-private buyer was a certain Ms. Daphne Guinness.

And they say so with some confidence, because she’s sort of said it herself. And let’s be honest, it makes complete sense, non?

“It’s Issy — it’s her DNA — it should not be scattered to the four winds,” Daphne remarked to the NY Times. “I want it to remain as a monument.”

We want it to remain as a monument too, but one that we can see, like in a museum or exhibition or something. But more than anything we’re delighted at this news, because frankly, that collection couldn’t have gone to a better home.

Good news all round.

Chic in Review | Snooki’s Got a Brand New (Gucci) Bag

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

DESCRIPTION

All the fashion news of the week that’s fit to reprint.

Banks, Tyra
Apologized for praising a thin girl and giving the wrong message about body image to viewers. Forgot that she hosts a modeling show.

Bardot, Brigitte
Mad that a biopic of her life is in the works. Also mad that Georgia May Jagger stole her look.

Campbell, Naomi
A former child soldier requests an apology from the supermodel for dismissing her presence at Charles Taylor’s trial as “inconvenient.” At least Campbell didn’t throw her cellphone at the lawyer questioning her.

Clueless

Cher Horowitz’s computerized closet is a reality. The 1990s are so back.

Conair
Has a new hair dryer that uses Ferrari parts. Price? Only $400.

Cruise, Suri
Is Katie Holmes’s stylist, which explains a lot. (See blue shoes with red dress at the Costume Institute Gala in 2008. Yeah.)

Geldof, Peaches
Managed to get herself a reality TV show. Only worth watching for Eli Roth cameos.

Gunn, Tim
Will be making an appearance on “Gossip Girl.” I can only hope he tells Serena “that’s a lot of look.”

Harrods
Putting the “man” in manicure with its new Gentlemen’s Lounge, which features big-screen TVs, a full bar and super-manly haircuts.

Jolie, Angelina

Designing children’s clothes with Brad Pitt. Hopefully with Maddox as the creative director and Zahara as the stylist.

LBD
Officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. OMG!

M.A.C.
Cancels Rodarte collaboration to avoid controversy. Fortunately, still donating $100,000 to Juarez, Mexico.

Madonna
Carries a clutch with a crucifix on it in an attempt to stay edgy. God bless her.

Makeup

“Less is More” has become the look for women of all ages. Somebody should probably tell Pamela Anderson.

Miss Haiti
Will compete in the Miss Universe pageant for the first time in 22 years.

Momsen, Taylor

Proudly declares, “I dress like a high class hooker.” By high-class hooker she means 17-year-old streetwalker.

Patridge, Audrina
Calls herself a style icon. In all fairness, she spends every day comparing herself to Heidi Montag.

Pelosi, Nancy
Named the most stylish female politician. Did everyone forget Hilary Clinton’s Oscar de la Renta already?

Perry, Katy
Is the new face of Diesel. Photographed topless, of course.

Reid, Billy
Collaborating with Levi’s on a capsule collection. Men’s-wear must-have.

Restoin-Roitfeld, Julia
The new face of Lanc?me and a consultant for Mark Fast? You go, girl.

Rhodes, Zandra
Wants to dress Lady Gaga. There’s a team I’d like to see.

Rimmel
Claims its new foundation stays on for 25 hours, making the walk of shame slightly more attractive.

Shirtlessness
An offense in the cities Perpignan in Pyrénées-Orientales and Cavaillon in Provence that can earn you a $49 ticket.

Shoelaces
Made out of precious metals cost $2,300. Donald Trump is so excited.

Snooki
Has a new Gucci bag that was definitely not a gift from Frida Giannini.

Trump, Donald
Teamed up with Talbott Teas to create his own line. He has to afford those shoelaces somehow.

Von Furstenberg, Diane
Designed hospital gowns. I’m resisting the temptation to call them “sick.”

Now Online | T Women’s Fashion Fall 2010

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

DESCRIPTION

At T, we strive to make every issue a well-rounded one. And this season, fashion is actually on the same page, with its embrace of women who literally bust the mold. Suzy Menkes contemplates the sudden appearance of breasts on the runway. Our cover star, Freida Pinto, of “Slumdog” fame, a rare beauty with a candor to match, throws a few curve balls at Horacio Silva — and a glass of wine at the photographer Ryan McGinley. Linda Yablonsky encounters the artist Nathalie Djurberg, whose twisted, animated feats of clay celebrate bodies emaciated, voluptuous and obese; Christopher Petkanas delves into Maxime de la Falaise’s smoldering unpublished memoirs and discovers a true lady Libertine; and Holly Brubach rediscovers the work of Caroline Blackwood, a brilliant writer whose talents are often eclipsed by her status as muse to Lucian Freud. Elsewhere, Daphne Merkin wonders if a couple of bosomy looks on the Louis Vuitton runway can conquer our much larger social fear of flesh (probably not); Ford Models revs up its engines with a more diverse lineup of faces and bodies; and the actress Laetitia Casta fills Brigitte Bardot’s shoes — and everything else. The end of Faith?

August 27th, 2010 admin No comments

Another one bites the dust this morning as British shoe brand Faith announces it’s gone into administration.

The troubled shoe store has been searching for a buyer for the past few weeks but to no avail – could this be the latest label to fall victim to the recession?

Well, possibly, but there’s still hope Faith yet: so long as an investor comes along soon all will be saved, and according to Elle UK, rumours suggest that British department store Debenhams could be hot on the brand’s heels after pulling Principles from its final plummet last year.

Whilst we’re sad at this news, naturally, here’s a small condolence – Faith is offering a 10% discount off everything in stores until further notice. Every cloud, right?

Here’s to hoping it finds a backer soon; as George Michael once said, you’ve gotta have Faith.

Lunchtime buy: ASOS pleat biker skinny jeans

August 27th, 2010 admin No comments

If, like us, you’re loyal to your skinny jeans, give your wardrobe a new-season twist with a panelled pair.

In a light grey wash – a great colour base, if you ask us – these biker jeans from ASOS feature pleated panels across the thighs and knees, which not only gives your denim a tough edge, it also gives them a bit of structure which, you’ll be pleased to hear, makes them super flattering.

And need we tell you they’re very reminiscent of a certain Balmain pair? Team with a slouchy tee and peep-toe boots for an effortless downtime look, and keep a tailored jacket handy when the weather’s down.

£36 at ASOS
